diagnosis: 

Cordaitean plants with mesarch xylem maturation of stem and leaf; primary xylem consisting of downward extensions of leaf traces; cauline bundles wanting. Leaves helically arranged with traces diverging from margin of pith as one or more bundles. Leaves strapshaped and assignable to Cordaites when found isolated. Cons axillary, compound, either single or paired; microsporangiate cones conforming to Gothania when isolated, at maturity containing monosaccate prepollen in the pollen sacs.
